What Is KYBELLA Used for?

Millions of Americans are concerned about the appearance of their chin. While most people develop a double chin when they gain weight, some suffer from submental fullness due to genetic factors or the natural aging process. At Revive MD Center in Glen Allen, VA, we help patients get rid of their double chin with a minimally invasive treatment called KYBELLA. This injectable is safe and effective, and it delivers permanent results.

What Is KYBELLA Used for?

Deoxycholic acid treatment has been approved by the FDA as a double chin treatment. The active ingredient melts away the fat cells in the treatment area and improves the appearance of the patient’s profile. This injectable is the only minimally invasive option for people who are struggling with a stubborn double chin that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise.

It is safe for almost anyone because deoxycholic acid is one of the secondary stomach acids, and it occurs naturally in humans. The treatment uses a synthetic form that is identical to the acid produced by the body. The double chin injection isn’t meant to treat lines, wrinkles, or lax skin. It isn’t a weight loss tool, so it’s not suitable for people who are overweight.

How Does the Treatment Work?

Most patients need three to six sessions at the clinic, each four to eight weeks apart. The appointments only take a few minutes, and patients can return home or go to work straight away. Before getting started, we ask each person to attend an initial consultation, so we can make sure treatment is safe and effective for them and come up with a suitable plan.

We start each double chin treatment by applying a numbing cream to the treatment area to reduce the sensation. Then, we mark the injection sites and inject the deoxycholic acid under the patient’s skin. This might take 15-20 minutes. Once we’re done, we ask the patient to wash and dry their treatment area. It’s important to protect the injection sites from dirt and direct sunlight.

What Does It Feel Like?

It’s unlikely that you’ll feel pain during your appointment because the tissues under your chin will be numbed. The needle we use is very small, so you won’t have a large wound. Avoid touching, rubbing, and massaging the injection sites for a few days to prevent irritation.

Preparation Time

You don’t have to spend a lot of time getting ready for your injections. However, there are some things you have to avoid in the days leading up to treatment. Don’t drink alcohol and smoke for at least five days, and stop using blood-thinning medication and supplements five to seven days before the appointment. You can keep taking Tylenol because it doesn’t thin the blood.

If you’ve never had injectable treatment before, plan to take a few days off work. You might want to ask someone to drive you to and from the clinic and stay with you for a few hours afterward. Once you understand how treatment works, you no longer need to take time off. Because the injection sites are on your neck and not your face, you can wear a scarf or turtleneck sweater to hide them.

Expected Results

It takes some time for the deoxycholic acid to start breaking down your fat cells. You might notice the initial results several weeks after your first injection. Each time you come to the clinic, the effect of the treatment intensifies. It might take your body three months to fully absorb the deoxycholic acid, so you’ll experience your final results around 12 weeks after the last set of injections.

Once your fat cells have been removed, they can’t grow back. This means that you’re unlikely to suffer from submental fullness again once you’ve been treated, and you don’t have to come back to the clinic for maintenance appointments. We might ask you to attend a final consultation several months after your last injections, so we can evaluate the results.

Keeping the Results Fresh

Although it’s unlikely that you’ll ever have a double chin again, the appearance of your neck can change if you gain a lot of weight because the fat cells in the surrounding tissues remain. The best way to keep your results fresh and prevent further issues is to maintain your current weight by sticking to a healthy diet and regular exercise routine.

Leading a healthy lifestyle also slows down the aging process. Your neck and chin remain smooth and blemish-free if you minimize your exposure to sunlight and always wear sunscreen when going outside. Exposure to UV radiation damages your skin cells and causes wrinkling, sagging, and discoloration. You can keep your body looking youthful by drinking plenty of fluids, minimizing your stress levels, and getting enough sleep.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The best candidates are people who have achieved their weight loss goals, have had a stubborn double chin for more than a few months, and are willing to live a healthy lifestyle to maintain their current weight. We always invite patients to the clinic for an initial consultation, so we can check their health records and make sure KYBELLA is safe for them. Deoxycholic acid injections don’t contain toxic chemicals, so they are suitable for almost everyone.

You’ve Had a Double Chin for a Long Time

Sometimes, a double chin is a temporary problem. People who only just developed submental fullness aren’t great candidates because they might not require treatment. We ask patients to wait for at least six months before getting their double chin injections. That way, they can be sure that their submental fullness isn’t a temporary issue related to their posture or a medical condition.

We don’t usually accept patients under the age of 21 because teenagers’ bodies can still produce new fat cells. This means that their double chins might come back, so they have to get treated again. Adults who have been suffering from a double chin for more than a few months are good candidates. We always ask patients whether they’ve tried holistic methods like changing their diet, drinking a lot of water, and doing regular exercise first.

You Are Able To Maintain Your Weight

As discussed, double chin treatment isn’t suitable for people who are overweight because it isn’t designed as a weight loss treatment. Sometimes, the patient’s double chin goes away when they achieve a healthy weight, and treatment isn’t necessary.

If you haven’t reached your target weight yet, keep working on your diet and exercise routine. You might benefit from the help of a nutritionist, dietitian, or personal trainer. Once you’re within 20-30% of your goal, book your initial consultation. You are a good candidate for double chin treatment if you can’t get rid of your submental fullness, even though you’ve lost a lot of weight in other areas of your body.

You’re Looking for a Minimally Invasive Treatment

In the past, people who wanted to get rid of their double chins had to undergo surgery. Fortunately, this is no longer the case. The deoxycholic acid injectable is the perfect method for people who prefer a minimally invasive treatment that doesn’t require a stay at the hospital and a lengthy recovery process.

Because the treatment is so gentle, it is suitable for people who can’t take part in elective surgery due to a medical issue. Almost everyone is eligible, even those suffering from a long-term condition. Pregnant women can’t take part until they have had their baby because there isn’t enough evidence that the treatment is safe for an unborn child.

You Don’t Have a Condition Related to the Neck

Double chin treatment isn’t suitable for people who have an active infection or skin condition on their chin or neck. It also isn’t an option for those with low skin elasticity, a weak chin bone, or a problem with their neck muscles. The injection might not be safe for patients who have trouble swallowing. If you have a medical condition related to your neck, speak to your primary physician about getting deoxycholic acid treatment.
