What Does Micro Needling Do for Your Skin?

Do you feel like your skin has lost its natural glow? Do you experience common concerns like acne, fine lines, and wrinkles, or sun damage? Are you unhappy with the uneven tone or texture of your skin? You could be an ideal candidate for Micro Needling, a simple treatment designed to refresh your skin and restore its smooth, vibrant appearance. We’re excited to offer this treatment at Revive MD Center in Glen Allen, VA, where we are dedicated to helping our patients reach their cosmetic and beauty goals with a variety of top-quality services.

What Is Micro Needling?

Micro Needling is a skin treatment that harnesses the power of your own body to heal your skin and correct common concerns. This treatment uses a handheld device with several tiny needles to create micro-wounds in the top layers of your skin. These tiny wounds trigger your body’s healing processes, which include new collagen and elastin growth and restorative healing factors that are sent to the treated areas to address the injuries.

By creating tiny channels in the skin, we can also deliver powerful treatments and serums into the deepest layers to achieve maximum rejuvenation. A typical treatment takes just 20-35 minutes and is completely painless thanks to a topical numbing gel. We can treat multiple areas of your body, including your face, neck, chest, hands, abdomen, back, arms, and legs.

We can also address a variety of skin concerns in patients of all ages. Thanks to its non-invasive nature, this treatment is considered appropriate for almost every skin type, tone, and sensitivity. It requires no downtime and, with ongoing treatments, can achieve healthier, clearer skin in just a few months.

What Does It Do for Your Skin?

The Micro Needling process stimulates your body’s healing responses, which includes new collagen production. Collagen is one of the major framework proteins in the skin. Along with elastin, this protein helps keep your skin lifted, smooth, and youthful. As we grow older, collagen and elastin production levels decline and the existing framework in the skin begins to deteriorate, resulting in lines and wrinkles.

This process can begin to impact the appearance of your skin as early as your mid to late-20s, but this treatment can help restore your skin’s health by stimulating new collagen and targeting the treated areas with powerful healing factors.

In addition, we can use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy or nourishing serums to deliver further refreshment to your skin during your treatment. Thanks to these combined factors, you can see your skin become more vibrant and your specific skin concerns diminish with each session.

Which Concerns Can This Treatment Address?

Since this treatment stimulates healing deep within your skin, you can see a variety of surface-level and underlying skin concerns improve with treatment. Here are some of the most commonly treated concerns at our office:

Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are usually caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. These aging-related concerns can also be accelerated by repeated harmful sun exposure.

This treatment can temporarily minimize mild to moderate lines and wrinkles by rejuvenating your skin’s collagen supply and creating a fresh new framework to keep your skin firm and smooth. We commonly treat lines and wrinkles on the face, neck, chest, and hands.

Scarring and Stretch Marks

Scarring can be caused by acne or injury, while stretch marks are a specific type of scar that is usually caused by rapid weight gain. These long-lasting marks can be a source of low self-esteem, but this treatment is able to effectively fade scars and stretch marks. In some cases, our patients see permanent results as their sources of insecurity disappear.

Sun Damage

The sun is estimated to cause over 90% of all common skin concerns, including dark spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and skin cancer. Protecting yourself from the sun by wearing sunscreen and limiting your time in direct sunlight is critical, but what happens if you can already see sun damage affecting your skin?

This treatment can help correct sun damage by fading discoloration, smoothing away lines and wrinkles temporarily, and helping your skin look and feel healthier with new collagen and restorative serums.

Enlarged Pores

Oversized pores often appear on your nose, midface, chin, and forehead. This treatment can successfully shrink pores by restoring the collagen framework in the skin, which helps keep your skin firm and tight. With repeated treatments, you can reduce the appearance of enlarged pores over time.

Uneven Tone and Texture

It’s common for the skin to exhibit an uneven tone or texture. Many patients find that their skin appears dull or lackluster and want to find a way to maintain bright, glowing skin. This treatment can help you achieve that goal by rejuvenating your skin with fresh collagen and elastin, which can contribute to your skin’s vibrancy and smooth texture.

In addition, recommended treatment combinations such as PRP therapy or restorative serums can further heal and transform your skin at multiple layers, resulting in a healthier, more youthful appearance.

Acne

Acne can impact teens and adults, but this treatment is able to address some types of acne by boosting collagen production and stimulating healing properties within the skin to reduce your chances of breakouts. One of our doctors can help you determine whether your unique acne concerns can be effectively treated with Micro Needling.

How Long Do Results Last?

While each patient’s experience is different, most patients see results lasting 4-6 weeks once the full effects of treatment are visible. Some skin concerns, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and acne, are ongoing and can be effectively managed with a personalized treatment plan.

In contrast, scars, stretch marks, and dark spots may be permanently improved with a short-term treatment plan. Most patients commit to ongoing treatments to maintain their ideal results and keep their skin smooth and healthy. Our doctors can give you a more detailed idea of what to expect from treatment during your consultation.

Am I a Good Candidate for Treatment?

If you are an adult man or woman who is unsatisfied with the appearance of your skin in almost any area of your body, this treatment could be right for you! In general, treatment is safe and effective for almost every patient.

A good candidate is healthy and is free from any skin conditions, infections, or irritations that could interact negatively with treatment. They should also have realistic expectations about the results they can expect to see after their recommended sessions.

You may not be an ideal candidate if you have severe lines or wrinkles, which are not effectively treated with Micro Needling. In addition, patients with cystic acne may not be ideal candidates since the treatment process may exacerbate this skin condition. One of our doctors will help you evaluate your candidacy for treatment during your initial consultation.

What Should I Expect?

Are you interested in this treatment but unsure of what a typical treatment process might look like? While each patient has a unique experience, here is a general overview of what you should expect during treatment:

Consultation

To begin, you will have a brief initial consultation with one of our talented doctors. This appointment allows our doctor to determine your candidacy for treatment by examining your skin and areas of concern and reviewing your medical history.

They will also ask you about the results you hope to achieve with this treatment. If you are a good candidate, you will be approved and can begin looking forward to your first appointment.

Preparation

In the weeks leading up to your first treatment session, you should avoid any skin treatment or product that could cause irritation to the target areas. This includes laser treatments, hair removal cream, waxing, or harsh exfoliants.

In addition, you should limit your sun exposure and avoid sunburn before your appointment. Finally, you should not shave the target area for at least 48 hours before your treatment to limit irritation.

Treatment

If your face is being treated, we recommend that you avoid wearing makeup in the target areas. Our trained practitioner will cleanse your skin and apply a topical numbing gel to numb your skin and keep you comfortable during your appointment.

They will then use the small, handheld Micro Needling device to begin treating your skin. As they pass the device across the target area, you may feel slight pressure and movement as the needles create small holes in your skin, but this process should be completely painless. After our practitioner has treated your skin, they can apply PRP, which is collected from a small blood sample prior to your treatment, or a powerful serum designed to further address one of your skin concerns.

These treatment combination options enhance the results of your treatment and can lead to more noticeable and longer-lasting final results. A normal appointment takes less than 30 minutes in total, giving you the flexibility to pamper your skin before returning to your normal activities immediately after your session.

Recovery

As your skin heals, it is important to avoid harmful sun exposure, which could delay full healing by causing additional irritation. You should plan to avoid any intensive treatments like chemical peels, laser treatment, or waxing for approximately 4 weeks to give your skin time to recover.

During this time, you can capitalize on the benefits of this treatment by using your favorite skincare products. Thanks to the tiny wounds created in your skin, these products often permeate much deeper than usual and deliver better results. Approximately 4-6 weeks after your first session, you can schedule follow-up treatments.

Results

Your final results will develop over the course of your treatment plan. For many patients, 3 sessions are ideal to stimulate fresh collagen production and address common signs of aging. Patients who wish to fade scars or stretch marks may need 4-6 sessions in total. Some patients wish to continue treatments every 2-3 months to provide their skin with a regular, rejuvenating boost.

Whatever your desired treatment plan, you should see your areas of concern improve significantly after each session. Scars, stretch marks, and dark spots should fade over time. Lines and wrinkles should temporarily vanish as new collagen framework lifts the skin. Acne breakouts should be less frequent, and sun damage and uneven skin texture should be greatly improved as your skin is consistently refreshed.
