What Can Regenerative Medicine Be Used For?

There is a new category of medicine that is becoming increasingly popular among everyone from high-profile athletes to the elderly for its ability to heal injuries and improve the state of the body altogether. At Revive MD Center in Glen Allen, VA, we offer this treatment, and it’s called regenerative medicine. This specialized medicine can help you do what pain medications simply cannot: heal from your injuries and even improve altogether post-treatment.

What Can Regenerative Medicine Be Used For?

Regenerative medicine is used to heal, repair, and regenerate tissue damage. It can heal and repair damaged cartilage, bones, tendons, and ligaments, and any other musculoskeletal injuries and conditions that can occur for various reasons.

Additionally, different treatments can help patients improve, and not just heal from their injuries. Everyone from the athlete to the elderly can benefit from these treatments and their ability to heal, reduce pain, and improve movement.

The Different Treatments

Specifically, clinics that specialize in these different treatments use medicines such as platelet-rich plasma therapy (also known as PRP), umbilical derived stem cells, and amniotic stem cell-rich injections to treat:

  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Cartilage defects
  • Fractures
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Hair loss
  • The signs of aging, specifically as they appear on the skin

How Is It Different From Typical Medicines?

Regenerative medicine is different from prescription medication in that these two medicines do not share the same goal. Prescription medications act like bandaids. Their main goal is to temporarily get rid of the pain by masking it, not treating it. They may reduce inflammation and pain, but they do not affect the ultimate recovery process. Once their effect wears off, the pain returns, and the injury is still unhealed, and you are left feeling discouraged.

Regenerative treatments are different from prescription or over-the-counter medicines because they work to stop the pain altogether by addressing the root cause of the problem: the injury. These treatments work to repair the tissue and regenerate the area. They help jumpstart the body’s natural healing process so that you can recover from your injury quickly and get back to your life and all of the things that you love, fully healed and pain and injury-free.

What Is Regenerative Medicine?

Many different types of regenerative medicine can be used to treat different conditions and improve the body in many ways. Some of these unique medicines include stem cell therapy, PRP treatments, umbilical cord treatments, and exosome regenerative therapy.

These medicines have become effective alternatives for many people who have finally found healing and ultimate pain relief from their conditions that they were previously masking with prescription medications.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy can jumpstart the body’s natural healing processes and lead to recovery from injuries. Stem cells can come from different cell types, including tendons, bones, red blood cells, or cartilage. This therapy repairs soft tissues and bones by increasing the total number of necessary, specialized cells in the treatment area. When these necessary cells are added to the treatment area, the recovery time is dramatically decreased.

What Are the Different Types of Stem Cells?

There are two different types of stem cells: limited and unlimited. Limited stem cells must be extracted and transplanted, or frozen for later use. They cannot be replicated outside of the body. Typically, these stem cells come from adult mesenchymal stem cells which come from donors. At our center, we do not use any types of controversial stem cells, we only use adult MSC products, including umbilical cord and amniotic products.

Unlimited stem cells are known as embryonic stem cells and can turn into any type of cell. They can be replicated outside of the body by specialists who then can inject them back into the body to treat certain conditions. Embryonic stem cell products are controversial by nature and are not used at our center.

How Are Stem Cells Put Into the Body?

Different methods can be used to put stem cells into the body. They can be administered locally or through IV injections that contain stem cells derived from amniotic or umbilical cord therapy. When these two therapies are used, consenting donors provide the fluid containing the stem cells after they undergo a C-section. The stem cells are then taken to a lab that is regulated by the FDA and frozen. Before use, they will be thawed and ready for administration.

PRP Treatment

What Is It?

PRP Treatments use platelet-rich plasma derived from the blood for its growth factors and its ability to regenerate the treatment areas. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, which is derived from the blood of the patient before treatment. Platelets have a unique ability to jump-start the body’s natural healing processes and can stimulate hair growth, improve the quality of the skin, and help the body heal from muscular, joint, and tendon injuries, among others.

How Does It Work?

Before treatment, the patient undergoes a standard blood draw. The blood is then placed in a device called a centrifuge, which rapidly spins the blood to separate the PRP from the rest of the blood. The PRP is then administered in different ways. It needs a perceived injury to be effective, which is why it is administered in injectable form into various injuries in the body.

When used to treat hair loss, it is often injected into various spots on the scalp to promote better quality hair and hair growth or regrowth. When used to treat the signs of aging on the face, it can be administered in injectable form, but also can be used in conjunction with microneedling, a treatment that uses small, thin needles that cause tiny injuries in the skin. The PRP is then applied to the skin and is readily absorbed into the microchannels to rejuvenate the skin.

Umbilical Cord Treatments

An umbilical cord may make your mind automatically default to a baby, and rightfully so. Umbilical cord therapy is an option thanks to the consenting, healthy donor mothers of healthy babies. We obtain these tissues from healthy women who have delivered healthy babies through a scheduled c-section. These tissues are then delivered to an FDA-certified facility and are processed via GMP techniques with both Wharton’s Jelly and amniotic fluid.

Once we receive these processed tissues, we can use them in stem cell treatments. They have provided many different patients with dramatic results, aside from speeding up recovery from their injuries, including:

  • Easier breathing
  • Increased energy
  • Increased mobility

Exosome Regenerative Therapy

Exosome regenerative therapy has unlimited potential, which is what has made it one of the most popular forms of regenerative medicine. Advancements are continuously being made in this field and will continue to develop as more and more of the benefits are unlocked.

What Is It?

Exosomes are not cells but instead are extracellular vesicles. They have the unique ability to communicate with other cells within the body and as a result, can help slow the overall aging process.

How Does It Work?

Exosomes are completely safe since they do not divide and multiply, a characteristic that is often associated with the development of tumors. Stem cells and other cells in the body release exosomes, which then communicate with other cells which leads to the ultimate reprogramming of the cells. This can be extremely beneficial when used for aesthetics and pain relief.

Who Is a Candidate?

A wide range of individuals qualify for these treatments, which can help provide healing and pain relief for many different people with many different conditions: and this is only the beginning. As more advancements develop within this specialized field of medicine, even more people will be able to benefit from all that it has to offer.

Athletes

Some of the most well-known athletes of our time have benefitted from all that these different treatments have to offer. These athletes include Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, and Hines Ward, to name a few. Athletes have used various forms of these alternative medicines to heal quickly and effectively from their injuries so that they can get back to what they love and what they excel at.

Fitness Enthusiasts

In the fitness world, it’s easy to get injured. An injury can be life-altering, and the last thing a highly active person wants to do is spend weeks being inactive, waiting for that injury to heal. These different treatments can benefit fitness enthusiasts when they get injured by speeding the healing process and leading to a faster recovery so that they can get back to their active lifestyle and competition prep that much sooner.

The Average Person

You don’t have to be a bodybuilder or an athlete to qualify for or benefit from these treatments. These treatments can benefit the average person who has a qualifying injury for which they want ultimate healing and a quick recovery. If you have suffered from a qualifying injury and don’t want to take the traditional route that includes prescription medication that simply masks your pain but doesn’t promote ultimate healing, you may be a candidate for these treatments.

Middle-Aged and Elderly Individuals

As the aging process occurs, we become more susceptible to injuries and the symptoms associated with pain. Basic movements can become more difficult, yet invasive medical procedures don’t have to be your first option.

If you are a middle-aged adult or even qualify as elderly, you can benefit from one of these treatments. They cannot only improve your pain symptoms but can help you move more easily and recover from your symptoms and injuries without the need for surgery. Once you experience all that these treatments have to offer, you won’t be able to go back to your prescription or over-the-counter painkillers because of the way that this treatment heals and repairs.
