Microneedling: What Should You Expect From Your First Session?

Microneedling is a natural and non-surgical treatment used to improve the appearance and feel of the skin. At Revive MD Center in Richmond, Virginia, we offer microneedling aesthetic treatments that leave clients feeling rejuvenated and confident. Learn more on what to expert for microneedling after first session.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment carried out with a device composed of very small, sterile needles. These needles create micro-punctures on the surface of the treated area, activating the body’s natural elastin and collagen production cycle. Treatment can be done on any area of the body, including the face, neck, chest, arms, abdomen, back, hands, and legs.

What Happens During a Treatment Session?

A treatment session begins with a thorough examination of the skin by one of our medical providers. This examination helps us assess the treatment area and determine the depth needed for the treatment needles. The skin is then cleaned and a gel is applied to the surface of the treatment area in order to numb the region and allow the device to slide across the skin.

Your medical practitioner moves and controls the device as it glides across the surface of the treatment area. The depth and speed of the needles are adjustable and can be slowed down or accelerated in order to improve the efficiency of your treatment. As the device is moved across your skin, the attached needles move into and out of the outermost skin layers very rapidly. An entire treatment session lasts for less than one hour.

How to Prepare for Treatment

Patients are asked to avoid the use of Retin A, Retinols, Vitamin A creams and other topical medication for 3 to 5 days before a treatment session. Patients should use sunscreen daily. Only skincare products recommended by your medical provider should be used beforehand in order to prepare skin for treatment. A few days before the first session, we may also recommend patients to follow other skincare routines that are specific to their individual goals.

Recovery After a Session

After a treatment session, avoid using skincare products for a few days following treatment in order to give the skin an opportunity to adjust. Patients should also protect themselves from the sun during their recovery after a session. The recovery time needed after a treatment session depends on the individual patient, but most clients are able to return to their routine activities after 2 to 4 days following treatment.

Patients should make sure to wait a few hours after the treatment before washing their skin. Sometimes patients may need to wait until the evening or the next day before washing their skin. Patients are also advised to wait between 12 and 72 hours before wearing makeup. Mineral-based makeup should be used following treatment. Sweating for the first 24 hours after treatment may cause negative reactions, so patients are recommended to avoid strenuous activity or exercise immediately after their session.

Is Treatment Safe?

Treatment sessions are sanitary, safe, and FDA-approved. Because treatment is less invasive and causes less trauma to the skin than other skin rejuvenation treatments, many patients are comfortable with the process.

The needles used during treatment are disposable and sterile. Needles are also covered with a protective sleeve, eliminating the risks of cross-contamination. The movement of the device and the depth of the needles are fully controlled by your medical provider, so treatment can be adjusted to fit your individual needs.

Is Treatment Effective?

Our skin follows a cyclical healing pattern, naturally producing collagen and elastin. However, over time, our skin’s collagen and elastin production cycle may slow down with age. Extreme or constant damage to the skin may also be too much for the skin’s natural healing cycle to catch up with. This treatment induces the skin’s healing cycle, speeding up collagen and elastin production and helping the skin to quickly heal itself.

This treatment produces noticeable results because it works hand-in-hand with the body’s natural processes. Treatment is proven to effectively diminish the appearance of scarring, stretch marks, sun and age spots, large pores, uneven skin texture, and fine lines and wrinkles. Even patients with sensitive or thin skin have experienced effective and comfortable treatment sessions with impressive results.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

The number of treatment sessions largely depends on the needs and desired results of each patient. For patients who would like to reduce the appearance of scars, three to six treatment sessions are recommended on average. For patients who would like to target the appearance of stretch marks, three to five treatments are usually recommended. Patients who would simply like a rejuvenated and more youthful look through collagen induction are advised to start with three treatments.

What Is the Frequency of Sessions?

Patients are advised to leave a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks between treatment sessions. This separation time helps the skin to adjust and heal. Your medical provider will appropriately schedule your sessions so that you can get the most effective series of treatments.

When Will You See Results?

How soon the results start to become noticeable depends on how the patient responds to the treatment. However, most patients begin to see results after the initial treatment session. As patients continue to receive treatment, results become more and more noticeable and the skin becomes increasingly rejuvenated.

Is Treatment Limited to Certain Skin Types?

Treatment is not limited to certain skin types. Patients of all skin types and skin tones can receive effective and safe treatment. Because treatment simply activates the body’s natural collagen production process, there is no risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. All patients who desire to achieve a more rejuvenated look are invited to see if treatment is right for them.

What Will Your Skin Look Like After Treatment?

The skin may require an adjustment period of 24 to 48 hours after a treatment session. Several days later, however, the skin fully adjusts and patients begin to notice a brighter, smoother, and more radiant look. The full effects of treatment begin to appear several months later.

Benefits of Treatment

Treatments are known to improve the effectiveness of topical creams. Blood circulation and collagen production are also improved around the treated area. Because treatment needles are non-allergenic, microneedling is also of benefit to patients with sensitive skin. Skin texture is significantly improved after treatment. The appearances of wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks are noticeably diminished with treatment. Treatment also helps to reduce pore size.

Many thousands of microneedling treatments have been performed worldwide and none have reported negative side effects. Patients recover within a few days of their session and are able to continue their regular routines.

Are You a Good Candidate for Treatment?

Treatment is suitable for patients of all skin types and skin colors. Treatment can be used on sensitive areas such as around the eyes, neck, back, and hands. Patients who have used Accutane within the last three months are not able to undergo treatment. Treatment is also not suitable for patients with open cuts, wounds, or abrasions.

Patients who have had radiation therapy on their skin within the last year or are suffering from skin infections or herpes simplex should not pursue treatment. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scars are not suitable for treatment.

What Are the Costs of Treatment?

We can help you determine the overall cost of treatment based on your individual healthcare needs and desired results. Treatment with microneedles can also be used along with other treatments in order to help patients achieve their desired results in a cost-effective manner. After a consultation, patients receive a cost breakdown of treatment.

We also offer financing options to help patients achieve their desired results. We accept all major health insurance plans for certain medical services. Patients are also able to use their FSA/HSA account to finance their treatment. Our medical staff can review payment options and help you to answer any financing questions you may have before starting treatment.

Should You Do Treatment Without a Professional?

There are multiple at-home treatment kits available. They aren’t, however, as effective as treatment at a professional medical center. Our medical practitioners are skilled in controlling the device and adjusting the depth of the attached needles. In addition, our medical providers are able to determine the correct depth of needles needed for your specific treatment session. Treatment with our medical providers ensures that patients get the most effective and comfortable experience.

We are also skilled to assess a patient’s individual skin condition and recommend the proper amount of treatment sessions needed in order to achieve desired results as soon as possible. As medical professionals, we are equipped to give patients personally tailored advice to help them prepare their skin before treatment and take care of their skin after a treatment.

Can You Use Other Treatments at the Same Time?

Microneedling treatment is often used in conjunction with other supporting aesthetic treatments. Popular supportive aesthetic treatments include IPL photo facials and laser skin rejuvenation treatments. Many patients also use hydrating serums such as HA serums in order to boost the effects of their treatments. Some patients also choose to incorporate platelet-rich plasma into their microneedling treatment sessions in order to promote healing and improve results.

Patients should consult with their medical provider before starting another treatment while undergoing skin rejuvenation treatment sessions with microneedles. We are often able and eager to advise patients on other supportive treatments that will help them to improve their results. We also make sure to recommend which treatments patients should avoid in order to help their skin effectively reap the many benefits of microneedling.
