How Should You Prepare for Juvederm Treatment?

Aging used to be something you just had to deal with; now, thanks to all of the advancements in cosmetic treatments and anti-aging medicine, you have a say in how aging affects your appearance. At Revive MD Center in Glen Allen, VA, we are proud to offer Juvederm treatment: a collection of dermal fillers designed to smooth lines and wrinkles, add volume to hollow areas, and enhance different facial features so that you can look and feel your best, both with and without makeup.

How Should You Prepare for a Juvederm Treatment?

Once we confirm that you are an ideal candidate for Juvederm treatment, we will schedule your injection appointment. Our patients always look forward to this appointment because they know that when they walk out, they’ll look better than they did when they walked in. Before you come to your appointment, we will provide you with a detailed list of directives you must follow to ensure that your body and your skin are fully ready for the treatment. These directives may include some of the following.

Avoid Certain Supplements and Medications

One week before your scheduled appointment, you should avoid anti-inflammatory medications and blood thinners. These supplements and medications can increase your likelihood of bruising, but refraining from use before treatment will help you avoid that added risk. When you avoid these products, you can rest assured that your body will be prepared and ready for treatment. You can resume their use once you get the go-ahead from your injector.

The blood-thinning and anti-inflammatory medications that you should temporarily discontinue include:

  • Aspirin
  • Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve
  • Garlic supplements
  • Fish oil
  • Vitamin E
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Ginkgo Biloba
  • Primrose oil

Skip Happy Hour

It’s important that you avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your treatment, and ideally 48 if possible. If you have a work-related or personal event that you cannot avoid, plan accordingly. Schedule your injection appointment at a time when you know without a doubt that you can avoid drinking alcohol beforehand.

That way, you won’t have to worry about whether you may have negatively impacted your future results by going to that post-work happy hour before your treatment.

Hydrate

Hydrated skin looks and feels the best, and it’s an important part of preparing for your treatment. Make sure you drink enough water during the days leading up to your appointment. Your skin will look supple and full, which will help your results look that much better.

Many things act as diuretics and can rob the body of hydration, including caffeine, alcohol, sodium, and intense exercise, among others. Drinking enough water is an essential habit for beautiful skin and getting the best results.

Don’t Wax Your Face

No one likes living with facial hair, but for 48 hours before your appointment, you need to avoid waxing your face as well as all hair removal creams and bleaches in your planned treatment area. Schedule your waxing or hair removal treatments around your dermal filler appointment so that you don’t risk showing up with an inflamed face on the day of your appointment. You should plan any hair removal a week before your scheduled treatment to be safe.

Consider Taking Arnica Montana

Arnica Montana is an herbal supplement that has been proven to help reduce inflammation and bruising. Many surgeons prescribe a version of this supplement to patients to help them recover from oral and cosmetic surgeries because of its powerful anti-bruising and healing properties. Those who take it post-surgery heal faster with fewer side effects.

While a dermal filler appointment is nothing even close to a facelift, we often recommend using this supplement before your injection appointment. It can help prepare your body for treatment so that you can count on getting the best results possible and enjoy those results as soon as possible. This herbal supplement is widely available at health stores and through online retailers, and you can begin taking it two days before your treatment.

Let Us Know if You Get a Cold Sore

Cold sores and injection appointments do not pair well together. If you have a cold sore in or near your planned treatment site, let us know before your appointment so that we can take the necessary steps to address the situation and move forward with your treatment. Piercing a cold sore can cause the virus to spread, leading to an outbreak. We can help control the spread, but we must be made aware of it ahead of time so that we help ensure the best results.

Temporarily Discontinue Use of Certain Topicals

Many facial treatments require that you refrain from the use of certain topicals pre-treatment so that your skin isn’t extra sensitive on the day of your appointment. Dermal fillers require the same kind of preparation. To get the best results, avoid any anti-aging products that contain harsh ingredients, including Retin-A, which is also known as tretinoin, glycolic acid, and exfoliants.
These products are anti-aging, but they can make your skin more sensitive. You don’t want to walk into an injection appointment with irritated or inflamed skin.

Arrive With a Clean Face

The best way to arrive at your appointment is with a clean face, free of products or makeup. If you are coming from work or cannot show up makeup-free, we will clean your skin pre-treatment and prepare it for injections.

Know the Aftercare Requirements

Another way to prepare for your appointment is to be aware of the aftercare requirements associated with this treatment. While there isn’t any downtime, there are some directives you should follow to care for your skin, specifically your treatment sites, once your injections are complete. Following these directives will help ensure that your Juvederm injections go smoothly and you get the best results. Once your receive your injections, you should be prepared to avoid:

  • Facial massages during the week after your treatment
  • Anything that could put pressure on your treatment sites
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Excessive heat (hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, exposure to hot weather)
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Strenuous exercise

All About Juvederm

Juvederm is a collection of dermal fillers designed to add volume below the skin’s surface to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles that have formed as a result of volume loss. They can also enhance the features and change the features you’ve never been thrilled with to the features you’ve always dreamed of. They deliver long-lasting results and can help increase your confidence in your appearance.

How They Work

The dermal fillers in this collection are hyaluronic-acid-based fillers. They contain a synthetic version of hyaluronic acid that very closely resembles what the body creates naturally. The body produces hyaluronic acid to help keep the skin supple, but production of this essential substance decreases with the aging process, and the skin bears the brunt of it.

That’s where dermal fillers like Juvederm come in. These fillers restore the volume beneath the skin that has been lost as a result of aging. With injections into your problem areas, you will see an immediate plumping effect in hollow areas, a lifting effect in sagging areas, and a filling effect in thinning areas. Each filler is made of a crystal clear gel that contains different sized particles based on the area it is designed to treat.

What They Treat

Juvederm has a filler to treat almost everything. There are different fillers that add volume to the cheeks and lift and contour them. Other fillers are designed to smooth facial folds and wrinkles, restore youth to the skin, and erase those stubborn lines like smile lines, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. There are formulations specifically designed to treat the lips, correct imperfections in the lips’ appearance, and add volume to one or both lips.

These same lip fillers can also smooth vertical lip lines that form around the mouth, also known as perioral lines. Other fillers can be injected deep into the chin to create a more aesthetically pleasing profile. Wherever you have experienced volume loss, these fillers can restore that volume and help you look and feel years younger.

The Results

The benefit of all of these dermal fillers is that they deliver instant results. You will notice an immediate improvement in the appearance of your problem areas once your injections are complete. Those results will continue to improve in the two weeks following your appointment as the ingredients settle below the skin’s surface.

Once injected with one or more of these dermal fillers, you can expect your results to be long-lasting. Most of the Juvederm fillers deliver results that last a year or longer and can even extend up to two years. When you come in for your initial consultation, we will determine which one of these dermal fillers is best for your needs. At that point, we can provide you with a more definitive time frame on how long your results will ultimately last.

The Pain Factor

No one enjoys getting poked with a needle, but you can rest assured that while you will see the needle when you undergo this treatment, but you will not feel it. Thanks to the ultra-fine needle attached to each of these injectables, the injection process is virtually painless.

Additionally, each of the Juvederm fillers contains lidocaine, which is a numbing agent. The inclusion of this numbing agent as one of the main ingredients in each filler ensures that you will remain completely comfortable.

The Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates for this collection of dermal fillers are adults over the age of 21 who want to enhance their features, like their lips, cheeks, or chin, or addressed the signs of aging that have developed on the lower half of their face due to volume loss. Ideal candidate or not pregnant or nursing, and are not allergic to lidocaine or any other ingredients in the fillers.

When you schedule your initial consultation with one of our experts, we will review your medical history, discuss any medications you have or are currently taking, and discuss your experience with dermal fillers.
