How Long Does Microneedling Last?

How do you define perfect skin? If perfect skin to you is skin that is healthy, free of blemishes, and smooth in texture, then one way you can get perfect skin is with microneedling treatments. At Revive MD Center in Richmond, VA, we know that microneedling is a good option for most people to improve the overall tone and texture of the skin. Learn about how long you can expect results to last and other ways to maximize your skin appearance before your first appointment.

How Long Does Microneedling Last?

Your initial microneedling results will typically last about four to six weeks at a time. As you have more treatments, the collagen production in your skin will remain high and you may be able to enjoy results for several months at a time. The same is true for treating pigmentation concerns, since these results can last for virtually as long as you can avoid new areas of hyperpigmentation.

Essentially, although the results of your initial treatments will only last for around a month, your final results can last for a substantially longer time. However, the results of this treatment will never be permanent. This is because the skin is in a constant state of change between turning over new skin cells and using resources like collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.

How Frequently Should You Have Treatments?

Most people will need a series of at least three to five appointments scheduled a month apart to achieve optimal skin results. After this point, to maintain your desired results, you will likely need to schedule regular touch-up appointments. The average frequency for these maintenance appointments is every three to six months, based on the condition of your skin. You may need touch-up appointments more frequently to address age-related concerns.

How Can You Maintain Your Results?

Aside from touch-up appointments, there are several things you can do to maintain your results. The best way to enjoy long-lasting results is to avoid developing any new skin concerns, such as sun damage and new scars. Although you can’t entirely prevent visible signs of aging, you can slow down visible aging by committing to wearing sunscreen each day.

You should wear sunscreen on any day you plan to spend more than 15 minutes outside. This includes days when it is cloudy outside, since sunlight rays can still reach your skin through clouds. It’s especially important to wear sunscreen during the hours of the day when sunlight is most intense, which is usually between 10 am and 2 pm. Both mineral and chemical sunscreens are good options to protect your skin.

Can You Maximize Your Results?

If you want to get the best results from each of your microneedling treatments, following preparation and aftercare guidelines is important. The preparation guidelines before your treatment may include directions to stop using chemical exfoliants and to avoid exposing your skin to sunlight and tanning beds. You may also be instructed to stop using medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as supplements such as vitamin E and fish oil, for at least three to five days before your appointment.

Following your treatment, you may be directed to avoid certain skincare products and activities that can lead to skin inflammation. These activities can include vigorous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and tanning beds. You will also not be able to wear makeup for at least 12 to 24 hours. But aside from preparation and aftercare guidelines, there are two other ways you can maximize your results.

Pre-Treatment Exfoliation

Although you should not use chemical exfoliants such as salicylic acid, AHAs, BHAs, and topical retinoids the night before your treatment, exfoliating your skin a few days before your appointment can enhance your results. When you complete a pre-treatment exfoliation regimen, you are preparing your skin to turn over new skin cells more quickly after your aesthetic facial, which can enhance results such as hyperpigmentation correction.

Post-Treatment Hydration

Post-treatment hydration for your skin is also essential. While your skin is recovering from this aesthetic facial, it will rely on hydration to produce adequate collagen and heal more rapidly. This is why adding additional hydrating serums to your skincare regimen is a good idea following your treatment. Drinking enough water is also a key step to take if you want to maximize the results of your treatment.

Can Skincare Products Make a Difference?

The skincare products you use after each of your treatments can make a difference in how quickly your results develop and how well you can address concerns such as fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and dryness. In fact, when you can stick to a consistent skincare regimen, you will likely be able to prolong your results for several more weeks, which makes it easier to maintain your optimal results. Ideal skincare products to use can include hyaluronic acid, vitamin K, collagen, retinol, and much more.

Do Skincare Products Perform Better After This Treatment?

In addition to skincare products prolonging your desired results, skin care products also tend to perform better after microneedling treatments. During this treatment, microchannels in the skin will allow your skincare products to penetrate deeper and affect cellular activity on a deeper level. You may also find that hydrating skincare products also maintain the moisture of your skin better after each of your facials.

What Skin Concerns Can Be Addressed?

This aesthetic facial can address a wide variety of skin concerns, which is one of the reasons why this treatment is an appropriate option for most people regardless of age and skin challenges. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment is highly effective for addressing textural concerns. Because this treatment will stimulate the skin’s natural regenerative cycle, it’s also an ideal treatment for turning over new skin cells to reduce areas of hyperpigmentation.

Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are usually caused by collagen depletion that occurs as the result of the natural aging process. When you can increase the level of collagen in your skin, you will be able to increase skin volume, and that will visibly erase fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity. Most people can address moderate lines and wrinkles on most areas of the face, particularly the forehead and the area around the mouth.

Sun Damage

Sun damage is often a challenging concern to treat, particularly because sun damage can affect several layers of skin due to a lifetime of unprotected sun exposure. Fortunately, turning over new skin cells more rapidly can regenerate targeted areas of the skin that will reduce dark spots, brown spots, sunspots, and other areas of hyperpigmentation.

Acne Marks and Scarring

People who have acne-prone skin are often challenged by scars left over from active acne. In particular, post-acne marks are areas of hyperpigmentation that may leave the skin with red, pink, or brown blemishes. Post-acne marks don’t always fade by themselves, which is why you may need to pursue treatments that relieve hyperpigmentation.

Similarly, shallow acne scarring interferes with the collagen arrangement in the subdermal layers of the skin. This form of acne scarring can be very difficult to treat and will usually not respond to at-home skincare products. However, when you increase collagen in the skin, you can smooth away shallow acne scarring.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks on the body can also be addressed with this treatment. Collagen induction therapy can be used on most areas of the body to fade the appearance of stretch marks. This works because this treatment technique will stimulate collagen on stretch marks, which will restore the texture of the skin, tighten the skin, and lighten the skin at the same time.

Are You a Good Candidate?

This treatment is a good option for people regardless of gender, age, skin tone, and skin type. Unlike many other facial techniques, this facial can be used on acne-prone skin, rosacea-prone skin, and sensitive skin. If you are pregnant, you will need to discuss the use of this facial with your dermatologist and primary care physician first.

Enhance Your Skin With Microneedling Treatments

Most people don’t have perfect skin and at-home skincare products alone usually aren’t powerful enough to make a huge difference. That said, a treatment such as collagen induction therapy can turn over new skin cells and increase collagen production deep within the skin to smooth away textural concerns and address hyperpigmentation.
