Can You Combine Dermaplaning and Chemical Peels?

When it comes to building a beauty routine, everyone has different requirements because everyone has different skin. But you may eventually come to a point where it might be necessary to combine aesthetic treatments to get the results you want. At Revive MD Center in Glen Allen, VA, we are happy to help you build your ideal treatment plan to address all of your skin concerns, including combining other treatments with dermaplaning.

Can You Combine Dermaplaning and Chemical Peels?

To put it simply, yes, you can absolutely combine dermaplaning and chemical peel treatments. In fact, you can have these treatments on the same day. Although both of these treatments exfoliate the skin, the different methods of treatment address different skin concerns. As a first step, dermaplaning can essentially clear the path for chemical peels to do the best work.

So, how would a combination treatment work? Essentially, the steps for each treatment would be the same. Like any other facial treatment, your skin will first be cleaned to remove bacteria and other impurities from your skin. Then one of our skin experts will complete both of the packages for your treatment, which may take about 60 or more minutes to complete. The basic steps of your treatment will include:

Dermaplaning

The process for this treatment is overall very simple. A sterile specialized blade will be used to gently scrape dead skin cells and peach fuzz (vellus hairs) from the surface of your skin, which will leave your skin smooth. The blade will be used on all areas of your face, including the forehead, cheeks, chin, and just below the jaw area.

After the blade has removed dead skin cells and fine hairs from the skin surface, your skin will be gently wiped to remove any lingering debris. With an ordinary package, this is the point where a hydrating mask would be applied. However, when this treatment is combined with a chemical peel, the next step will actually be applying the peel.

Chemical Peel

When you combine two exfoliation treatments, it’s ideal to use a light chemical peel so that the skin is not overwhelmed. A light chemical peel from one of our peel collections will be applied to the surface of the skin and left to soak for about 10 minutes. This timeframe will allow the chemical to further dissolve or exfoliate skin cells near the surface of the skin so you can enjoy deeper skin renewal. After the chemical has soaked on the skin, it will be removed with a neutralizing agent or soap.

What Chemical Peel Treatments Are Used?

At Revive MD Center, we offer SkinMedica chemical peels to perfect the appearance and health of the skin. Backed by science, SkinMedica peels come in a variety of strengths that can address specific concerns. Our peels include the Illuminize Peel for minor concerns related to acne and pigmentation, the Vitalize peel to revitalize the skin, and the Rejuvenize Peel for age-related concerns.

We will help you select the chemical peel treatment that is an ideal match for your skin. The Vitalize Peel is most popular for adults, while the Illuminize Peel may be a better choice for younger people and the Rejuvenize Peel is typically preferred for people with mature skin.

Hydration

It’s common for a hydrating mask to then be used on the skin after this combination of treatments. Otherwise, a gentle moisturizer and sunscreen will be applied to the skin to soothe and protect the skin after your treatments.

Please speak with our skin experts to discuss the finer details of this combination treatment. We are committed to helping you make informed decisions about your skin health and appearance.

What Can These Treatments Correct?

Each of these treatments addresses a different concern with the texture and appearance of the skin. For example, while both of these treatments can address skin dullness and hyperpigmentation, dermaplaning treatments only address pigmentation concerns on the very top of the skin surface, while chemical peels can correct pigmentation that starts slightly deeper in the skin, such as melasma.

These treatments can address concerns such as:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Skin laxity
  • Skin dullness
  • Rough texture
  • Light or shallow scars
  • Acne marks
  • Age spots
  • Melasma
  • Enlarged pores
  • Other skin imperfections

What Should You Do Before Treatment?

For an ordinary dermaplaning treatment, you actually won’t have to do much preparation since this treatment will only exfoliate the surface layer of the skin. However, when this treatment is combined with a chemical peel, you may need to make different preparations about three to five days before your appointment.

One of the most important things you can do is avoid using certain chemicals on the skin, including other chemical exfoliants that may be part of your daily skincare routine. You should also avoid direct sunlight to avoid skin irritation before your treatment.

What Should You Do After Treatment?

After your combination treatment, your skin will be very vulnerable because the top layers of skin cells have been removed from the skin surface. For this reason, you should follow two cardinal rules: keep your skin moist and keep your skin protected. Ideally, you should use a light moisturizer at least twice a day to keep your skin hydrated as new cells turn over.

You should wear SPF 30 or higher during the daytime, even if you don’t plan to be outside. Even sitting near a window can mean UV rays from the sun touch your skin. While unprotected exposure to sunlight can certainly burn your skin, exposure to UV rays can also cause premature aging in new skin cells. For the best results, wearing SPF daily will protect your skin.

When Will You See Results?

By itself, you can see dermaplaning results on the same day as your treatment. This exfoliation treatment reduces skin dullness immediately and will encourage blood flow to the surface of the skin. Most patients will notice instant results with brighter, refreshed, and more refined-looking skin. Even the appearance of fine lines will be immediately diminished.

A chemical peel, on the other hand, may take several more days to produce results. For a light chemical peel, you may need three to five days to see any significant results for the appearance of pigment or texture concerns.

How Long Do Results Last?

The results of each of these treatments can last up to four to six weeks, depending on your age, your skin type, and your skin sensitivity. Each of these treatments works with the natural cycle of your skin, particularly your cellular turnover rate. Your skin cells have a natural cycle that lasts about 28 to 40 days, depending on age and health.

An exfoliation treatment removes dead skin cells and regulates this cycle, which means your results will last for as long as dead skin cells do not linger on the skin surface. For most people, that means having this treatment combination once a month for best results.

Can Everyone Combine Treatments?

In general, most people can combine these two exfoliation treatments. However, people who have very sensitive skin may not be able to use these treatments concurrently. The best way to determine if combining these treatments is right for you is to attend a consultation appointment with one of our skin experts. Our experts can analyze your skin type and skin concern to determine if you are eligible to combine these treatments.

Who Are Good Candidates?

Both women and men who have challenged skin may be good candidates for these treatments, including those who have mature skin. Additionally, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding may also be good candidates for these treatments. If your skin is challenged by texture or pigmentation problems, you are likely eligible for treatment.

However, some people may not be good candidates based on the condition of their skin. People who have very oily skin, significant facial hair, and moderate to severe active acne may not be qualified for either treatment. Our skin experts will guide you toward a treatment plan that will meet all of your aesthetic needs.
